An additional 90 Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) stores will be built nationwide this year with Sabah and Sarawak bagging 57 of the total addition as noted by Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakub. According to the Minister, The government will strive to build at least one KR1M in each parliamentary constituency.
With a budget of RM40 million, the government had built 25 KR1Ms in 2011 and 60 last year. As of now eight KR1Ms are in progress in Sabah and Sarawak.
Ismail said that the opposition had harped on complaints regarding the KR1M products at the begining of it's implementation they didn't not want KR1M to succeed.
The demand for more KR1M outlets and the Prime Minister's concerns over the request from the people who have yet to have them in their area had led the government to approve 33 additional outlets in the peninsular. Thus prompted the Prime Minister to approve an additional allocation of RM16.5 Million to open 33 KR1M outlets in the peninsula on Wednesday, 13 February of this year.
However, the allocation for Sabah and Sarawak is much higher at RM 87 million due to the additional expenditure, such as transportation to rural areas. This roughly translated in (terms if cost) that to build one KR1M is RM1 Million to RM1.5 million in Sabah and Sarawak compared to the peninsular which is just around RM 500,000.
The products under KR1M has received a positive response from the public that other shop outside of the KR1M franchise opt to sell KR1M products. This was reflected by the demand for KR1M products was so good that more than 500 shops are selling them.
