SYC proposed a study to resolve the unemployment rate among Sabah's youth

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Youth Council (SYC) wants a study to be conducted to analyse the ‘mismatch’ of data on youths in the state. This is also to clear the air on the blame pointing towards government when youth's, especially living in urban areas do not support the government's aspiration. Although, the government had allocated RM320 million to implement various activities including entrepreneurship training and leadership programs at the state and district levels.

Its president, Kevin Lim said the study would be timely to address the rate of unemployment among the demographic.

The study made an observation that the existing job shows that youth in Sabah are facing with challenges in seeking employment and moreover, the rapid changes in information technology along with diverse needs of employers adds to the challenge.

Furthermore there are other factors contributing to the rise of unemployment rate:
  • Creation of jobs in private sectors do not tally with numbers of student flooding the market which;
  • Creates competition but contributes as well to unemployment.
  • Rapid changes in technology
  • Diverse needs of employers

“Therefore a study should be done to analyse the ‘mismatch’ of data so that youth graduates in the state can have better opportunities for employment,” said Kevin.

The council believes the potential of every individual should be nurtured from birth and their talents polished.

SYC is greatly concern for the welfare of youth graduates in both urban and rural areas who are forced to compete relentlessly for employment opportunities.

SYC also called for the creation of a special institution dedicated for youth development in which Kevin said is vital for preventing leakage of authentic information so it can be directly dedicated to youths.

“Therefore, a special institution is needed so that youths can be equipped with training and skills to ensure their roles and responsibilities to help develop the country can be understood clearly and not so easily distorted by unverified information,” said Kevin.

He said youth leaders should also be given accreditation and their views be taken seriously when conducting data studies for their development.

Towards this end Kevin also hoped that youths with good qualifications would be considered for appointment to local councils because they possess the potential to be a driving force or instrument to achieve development and implement government policies.
