More approved Flyovers For KK : Traffic congestion will be a thing in the past

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Traffic congestion at key intersections on roads leading out of the city can be a thing of the past, if more flyovers are constructed. The State Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed six flyovers for the state capital as measures to ease traffic congestion. Two have been built so the remaining four are planned to be located in Bukit Padang, Mile 5, Inanam, Lido traffic lights and the Penampang bypass traffic lights.

Speaking to reporters after officiating at the “JKR Sabah Wayleave Management’ dialogue on tuesday, Amrullah said that PWD was also considering upgrading the six kilometer road from the Inanam Mile 5 traffic lights all the way to the KKIA into three lanes.

This is because the road is supposed to be a short cut to the airport but is congested most of the time, he lamented.

The Public Works Department reckons that motorists will be a happier lot with traffic flow all the more smoother, especially during peak hours.

The priority flyovers are at the Bukit Padang-Jalan Lintas interchange and the Mile 5, Jalan Tuaran-Inanam interchange, said Deputy Director of the PWD, Amrullah Kamal.

The current approved ones as being said are the Bukit Padang-Jalan Lintas and Mile 5, Jalan Tuaran-Inanam. Cost of the two new flyovers and road widening project is expected to be more than RM200 million. The projects have been approved and now PWD is waiting for the funds.

The other two proposed by the PWD are located at the Jalan Penampang-Jalan Lintas interchange (popularly known as the Merdeka junction) and the other is at the Penampang by-pass, though less urgent at the moment.

He also mentioned that if there's extra budget they would consider to build one more flyover at Foh Sang.
