KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Immigrations Department collected RM909 million over five years between 2008 to 2012.

Its director, Datuk Mohammad Mentek said 70 per cent of the amount was collected from the levy payment on foreign workers.

“The plantation sector contributed the most because we have a lot of foreign workers in that sector,” he told reporters at a press conference here yesterday.

Last year, the department also collected more from compounds issued for various Immigration offences because there were more operations mounted, he added.

In 2012, a total of RM6.948 million was paid for compounds due to the offences which was RM4 million more than the RM1.8 million collected in 2011.

On performance level recorded last year, Mohammad said 15,959 people were screened during the 851 operations conducted.

From the number, the department detained 6,117 people which was higher than the 4,400 arrested the year before.

The operations also resulted in 37 employers detained with 14 already charged in court.

Meanwhile, Mohammad said employers who have not paid the compounds will be given two weeks starting today, 18 February, to do so under the 3+1 Programme for illegal immigrants in Sabah.

The four-month programme which initially ran from 1 August to 30 November last year, was introduced as one way of addressing the influx of illegal immigrants to the state.

Mohammad said it gave an opportunity for illegal immigrants registered under the 5P Programme to sort out their documents because their respective embassies are unable to do so. The 5P consists of registration, amnesty, monitoring, enforcement, deportation.

Under the programme, all applicants are asked to pay a compound of RM300 and RM100 for a special pass.

Mohammad said the total number of applications received for the 3+1 programme was 49,658 with 46,372 getting approval.
