Air Asia will also be introducing its aircraft, Musa A320, named after the state's Chief Minister as an appreciation of the state government's support, by year-end.
KOTA KINABALU - AirAsia wants Sabah, which is mid-point between North Asia and Australia, to be developed as the biggest low-cost carrier (LCC) hub in the Pacific region.

The airline's founder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said towards this end, the state should have an airport specifically for LCCs.

"We are struggling at Terminal 2 (of Kota Kinabalu International Airport) and we don't want to be in Terminal 1 ... we depend on low cost to stimulate growth," he said.

"Low-cost (operations) is very important and we want Sabah to have the biggest low-cost terminal in the Pacific region so that we can expand the whole airport area into a city within a city."

Tony was replying to a question on what he would do for the state to make Sabah as a hub if he was a chief minister.

He was attending the Sabah International Business Luncheon Talk 2012 at the Grand Ballroom, Pacific Sutera, here yesterday.

Also present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and State Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun.

Fernandes stressed that tourism potential in the region is massive and AirAsia can play a big part in that.

"I think there is a huge economic upside in making Sabah the biggest LCC hub in this part of the world. That is something I would encourage."

Meanwhile, he also announced that AirAsia will be opening a new international route from Kota Kinabalu to Cebu (Philippines) in December.

The world's best low-cost airline will also be introducing its aircraft, Musa A320, named after the state's Chief Minister as an appreciation of the state government's support, by year-end.

During the business luncheon talk, Fernandes shared his success stories with more than 200 local and foreign entrepreneurs.
