KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman has stressed that women play a significant role as a driving force in the country’s transformation efforts to achieving a developed nation status by the year 2020.

Musa also added that women need to equip themselves in the various fields of knowledge, innovation and creativity including building their self-confidence in order to be able to compete and contribute to the nation’s rapid development in the various sectors today.

“We realise that women play a vital role in influencing and working together with men to develop the nation particularly Sabah,” said Musa.

He was delivering his keynote address when launching the “Women as the Driving Force in the Country’s Transformation” seminar in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary (Golden Jubilee) of The National Council of Women’s Organisations (NCWO), Sabah at Tabung Haji Complex here, yesterday.

Musa further expressed hope that women today would display stronger leadership qualities and he welcomed the initiative by NCWO for organising such an event.

“The roles of women have had a great impact not only as housewives, but also in the business sector, in leadership, in politics and in public administrations.

“Women have held important positions in the public and private sectors that clearly shows that women in this country are very competitive with high competencies,” he added.

In his speech, Musa also praised the efforts of women who independently raise their standard of living by establishing small businesses through the loans provided by the government.

“The majority of borrowers are women and they are very good in paying back the loans and by paying back, they are opening doors for other women to apply for this loan for business.

“Some of them apply loans of RM30,000, RM20,000 and even RM10,000. It is a small amount but it means so much for them to open up a small business such as farming, selling cakes, sewing and many other small businesses,” he added.

He also called for more women to start or expand their businesses by applying for these loans as the government will not hesitate to allocate more money as long as the loans are paid.

In another unrelated matter, Musa said that the people on the east coast of Sabah should not be worried so much about their security as the launching of Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently will ensure more comprehensive surveillance and control.

“The quick and precise action taken by the federal government in particular our Prime Minster, has made the people more comfortable and confident in the Barisan Nasional,” he said.

When asked about the requests from Umno Sepanggar grassroots saying that they do not want the outsiders to be nominated as a candidate in GE-13, Musa urged the Umno and Barisan Nasional party to keep united and continue their effort to win the vote.

“Do not worry so much about the candidates, as long as they have the capability, we will support them, the most important thing is we work hard and ensure the victory of the party.

When speaking to the media at a press conference after the launching ceremony yesterday, he also expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by Umno Sepanggar who are working very hard to ensure that their candidates win.

Also present were Yang Dipertua NCWO, Professor Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hassan Shahabudin and Vice Yang Dipertua NCWO, Datuk Dr Hjh Bibi Florina Abdullah.
