KOTA KINABALU: The Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah wants the products which have been recognised locally and internationally to be commercialised through smart partnerships with the industry.

He said this because of the intellectual property research and innovation is an important asset of a university that can generate revenue if successfully commercialised.

He added that in an effort to protect the intellectual property, UMS Sabah together with MyIPO Sabah were successfully given protection to 23 intellect Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights.

“Some of intellectual property has been assessed for the purpose of commercialisation and hopefully it will be successfully commercialised in the near future.

“Intellectual property related research on seaweed production technology, the concept of a mini estate has been successfully licensed for commercialisation. Congratulations to the researchers who are involved in sustaining the seaweed industry in the country, “he said.

He said this when speaking at the UMS Researcher Award at the Promenade Hotel, here, on Saturday night.

Mohd Harun said the research and innovation excellence of a university is now measured by using MyRA instruments by the Ministry of Education (MOE).

“Based on the seven key criteria that were measured last year, UMS is able to achieve a three-star level. This achievement was the hard work and cooperation by the members of UMS, “he said.

To further enhance the research quality of the university, he also urged researchers to strengthen UMS cooperation expertise with the leading foreign universities in certain niche areas.

He said last year, the government through the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and other ministries allocated RM8.3 million for staffs to undergo 80 new research projects.
“KPT has also approved RM200, 000 to carry out the technology transfer in the field of aquaculture; while RM2.4 million was funded by private and international agencies to carry out 11 research projects.
“I hope this research projects can be carried out successfully, thus producing and publishing high-quality products,” he said.

For lecturers who have not received any research grants, Mohd Harun hope they will work harder to obtain the research grants; not only from government but from external sources.

“I would urge all researchers to redouble their efforts to produce more work and publish high impact journals this year,” he said, adding last year, UMS was able to produce 199 papers with high impact journals and indexed. He said in order to strengthen the research niche that suits the needs of the country, particularly in Sabah, four new research units has been established in the past year.

“The four units were the Seaweed Research Unit, Sustainable Palm Oil Research Unit, Borneo Heritage Research Unit and Tuberculosis Research Unit.

“I hope all this research units can intensify our efforts to carry out research and innovation that will one day be recognised as HiCoE ministry,” he said.

Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) UMS Prof Dr. Shahril Yusof, Director of Research and Innovation Centre UMS Prof. Dr. Felix Tongkul, leading university officials, deans, directors, department heads and senior researcher UMS.
