NEW DELHI, (Bernama) -- AirAsia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes was conferred the "Dr KGC Verghese Lifetime Achievement Award" Saturday by the Hindustan Group of Institutions in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the global aviation industry.
The award was instituted last year in memory of the group's founder chairman the late Dr KGC Verghese, a visionary technical educationist especially in aeronautics and automobile engineering who also started the first private air taxi service in India, Air Asiatic, in early 1990.
Fernandes, who was in Chennai to receive the award, will also be travelling to Cochin, Mumbai and Delhi.
Earlier reports had said that he is set to meet India's Aviation Minister Ajit Singh with regards to AirAsia India's flying licence.
This will be Fernandes' first visit after his company joined hands with the Tata Group and Arun Bhatia of Telestra Tradeplace to launch a low-cost airline in a 49:30:21 partnership.
