Maybank's New Chief Might Be Announced End-June

KUALA LUMPUR, (Bernama) -- The new chief executive officer (CEO) of Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) might be announced as early as end of this month, said its chairman, Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor.


He said currently, the bank's board of directors was carefully scrutinising potential candidates, to find a person whom it believed could further transform Maybank into a globalised banking institution.

"It (the announcement) is going to be this month or early next month. We are planning to do it as quickly as possible.

"We are still evaluating the potential candidates. There were no shortlisted candidates, as all of them were good," he told reporters on the sidelines of Invest Malaysia 2013 here today.

Maybank is Malaysia's largest financial services group and the leading banking group in South-East Asia.

Megat Zaharuddin said the potential candidates came from internal and external sources with good banking track records.

He said the new CEO must keep up the good work by former president/CEO, Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, who left to become the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit.

Abdul Wahid, assumed his new post on June 5. He was also appointed as a senator.

It was widely reported that the potential internal candidates were Maybank current officer-in-charge, group chief financial officer Mohd Rafique Merican, investment banking head Tengku Datuk Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Bank Internasional Indonesia president director Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli.

Bursa Malaysia's Datuk Tajuddin Atan and Axiata Group Bhd president Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim, were also reported to be on the list of external candidates.
