Haze level hazardous-Muar schools closed

The annual haze that hits the country has reached health threatening level in Muar, Johor, resulting in a total of 211 schools in Muar being closed yesterday, following the hazardous air pollutant index (API) level in the area yesterday morning.

Of the number, 40 are secondary schools while 171 are primary ones, Education director-general Tan Sri Abdul Ghafar Mahmud toldfz.com.

Johor director of education Mohd Nor A Ghani said the state department decided to order the closure of the schools today after the Air Pollutant Index (API) reached the hazardous level.

Mohd Nor said the closure of the schools in Muar would affect 76,940 students.

According to the Department of Environment's (DoE) website, the API for Muar as of 11am yesterday is at 383. It had risen from 337 at 7am.

The air pollution level is categorised as hazardous when the reading is 301 or more; very unhealthy at 201 to 300; unhealthy at 101 to 200; moderate at 51 to 100 and good at zero to 50.

The readings for several other towns had also worsened. For yesterday, The API was at the "Very Unhealthy' level at Kota Tinggi (232), up from 211 at 7am. Towns in Johor where the reading was at the "Unhealthy' level were Larkin Lama (181), up from 171 at 7am, Pasir Gudang (199), up from 190 at 7am. In Melaka, the readings deteriorated slighly for Bandaraya Melaka (137), up from 134 at 7am and Bukit Rambai (119), up from 117 at 7am.
