KOTA KINABALU: Putatan will have 1,000 units of People’s Housing Project houses by 2015.
According to Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Edward Yong, the houses would be sited in Meruntum (500 units) and Ketiau (500 units).
He added that the project was already approved and was simply waiting for the appointment of a contractor who would undertake it.
He also said the project would address the squatter issue that plagued the district.
Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin has mentioned that following the foreign intrusion in Lahad Datu, there was a need to address the existence of squatters in the district.
“We know the intrusion is connected to squatters, and we in Putatan cannot run away from this issue. Hence, I ask the District Council to act on this issue so that more housing would be developed within the district to eradicate the existence of uncontrolled squatters on our waters, and some at our mangroves. It is difficult for us to know who these folks are, but if we have proper housing and no squatters, we will know and we will be able to control and monitor the folks that reside within an area,” he said.
