KOTA KINABALU: A total of 1,706 organisations have been recognised by the Malaysian Productivity Council (MPC) Sabah through the Quality and Environmental Management System (QEMS) certification.

MPC Board of Director member, Datuk Awang Buhtamam Awang Mahmun said the certification recognised organisations that have implemented the system.

“From 2000 until January 2013, as many as 1,706 organisations have been certified; 1,034 are from the public sector, 363 are Multi National Companies (MNC), Government Linked Companies (GLC) and 309 are small and medium enterprises (SMEs),” he said.

In his speech text during the ‘New 5S Standard Seminar and Best Sharing Practices’ held yesterday, he noted that MPC is the first organisation to offer the QEMS certification. The seminar, organised by MPC, saw 184 participants from 45 organisations.

Buhtamam commented that the participation demonstrated the organisations’ commitment to improving efficiency and to provide the best service to its customers.

“For Malaysia to become a developed and high income nation, we need to double our efforts in driving productivity and innovation,” he added.

“The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak once said, ‘If we can tie productivity with innovation and creativity, the improvements in problem solving will see a quantum leap instead of just being incremental’,” quoted Buhtamam.

He explained that this is the reason why MPC is a driving agent for productivity and innovation in Malaysia while playing a role to assist organisations to improve quality, innovation and productivity; to improve and strengthen human capital, and to ensure the quality, productivity and innovation system is practiced in all companies.

Buhtamam, who is also Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia president, said that the implementation of the latest technology will also help improve the performance of an organisation as a complementary tool to help with management.

“To ensure a truly quality and effective service, human resource must be developed and an environment aimed at excelling must be enforced,” he said.

He also urged organisations to maintain awareness about current developments in order to stay one step ahead.
