Employment opportunities in Sabah: Tourism

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Venturing for employment in the tourism industry is highly deemed as a good option; given the fact that the prospects as well as the demands in this industry is relatively high. In the case of Sabah, tourism is destined to be the key driver for the services sector. As a major contributor to the State's GDP, it accounted for 53.3% of total employment in Sabah in 2006.

Regarded as one of the important economic drivers for Sabah, tourism is the third highest contributor to Sabah’s economy after agriculture and manufacturing; due to the proliferation of investment by both local and overseas player.

Apart from that, Sabah has set a target of 3.1 million visitors with an estimated receipt of RM5.5 billion for 2013. The projection is based on the increase in the number of tourist arrivals in Sabah. For the first half of 2012, the total arrival of visitors to Sabah is 1,372,525; an increase of 1.7 per cent compared with the same period in 2011.,

The increased in the number of tourist arrival fueled the establishment of hotels, resort and other tourism-related business in Sabah, which in turn had provided employment opportunities for Sabahan and non-Sabahan.

Two major development projects were announced back in 2010. Upon completion, it will give extra boost to the state's tourism industry and generating jobs for the locals. The first project is the construction of an integrated eco-nature resort in Sabah by Karambunai Corporation. This project is estimated to be complete within a 10 year period at a cost of RM6.5bn. This venture is expected to generate estimated 15,000-20,000 vacancies.

The second major development project currently underway is the RM75m Pulau Gaya Resort which is undertaken by the YTL Group, one of Malaysia’s largest infrastructure conglomerates. Once this upscale resort is completed, it is expected to attract high-yielding international visitors thus help boost the state’s tourism receipts.

  1. Tiada alasan untuk golongan belia ke luar negeri untuk mencari pekerjaan. Di Sabah sendiri pun banyak peluang kerja yang wujud berikutan pembukaan hotel2 baru, premis2 perniagaan dan projek2 Petronas.
