Agriculture Significance In Sabah

"When you concentrate on agriculture and industry and are frugal in expenditures, Heaven cannot impoverish your state." This ancient saying that was stated by a Chinese Confucian philosopher (who lived during the Warring States Period ), Xun Zi still have a significant meaning in the present time. Agriculture has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the Malaysian economy since the country’s independence in 1957.

Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Yahya Hussin, has made a point last year during the EMPA Seminar on “Water Management in Oil Palm Plantations" that agriculture played out it's prominence during the 1997 recession when its earnings soared to fill the nation’s coffers emptied in the economic crisis. Out if the crisis, the nation has emerged mainly by the grace of agriculture.

Realizing the vast potential in the agriculture sector, the State Government is fully committed to the development undertaking, with specific attention given to the policy to enhance production.

Yahya said, the State Government, in its continuous effort to improve the livelihood of its people, is promoting agriculture as one of the main thrust areas to attract investment and play an integral part in the development of the State; With the implementation of various programmes that contributes towards improved food production.These programmes include the development of padi planting with a RM19 million allocation, production of planting material at RM11.3 million, development of fruit planting at RM1 million and RM1.2 million for the planting of industrial crops.
