MIMOS Develops Sensor For Agriculture & Aquaculture Sector

Saturday, December 22, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 -- MIMOS, the national research and development centre in information and communications technology, has developed a sensor, Mi-MSCAN TpH, for the agriculture and aquaculture sector.

The sensor is the world's first ion-sensitive field effect transistor-based calibration-less temperature and pH sensor for outdoor monitoring which can be applied as solutions for both sectors.

MIMOS Microelectromechanical systems/Nanoelectromechanical systems and Nanoelectrics research director, Saat Shukri Embong, said the new technology was now ready for adoption by the agriculture and aquaculture sector.

"MIMOS has deployed the technology in Bumbung Lima in Kepala Batas, Setiu in Terengganu and Tuaran in Sabah," he told Bernama here today.

He said farmers and fishermen played important roles in maintaining the country's food supply chain ecosystem.

"Mi-MSCAN TpH is an opportunity for them to reap higher yield thus improving their income.

"This would also impact the Malaysian economic growth at large," he said.

Saat Shukri said the sensor did not require calibration throughout its usage whereby the current commecial solution required one every three days.

He said this would ensure lower operational cost, lesser complexity and ease of usage.
