Malaysia second best in Asean for dynamic growing businesses

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is the second best country in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) for dynamic growing businesses, according to the Grant Thornton Global Dynamism Index (GDI).

Malaysia, which came in second after Singapore, was ranked 23rd globally.

Managing partner of SJ Grant Thornton, Datuk N.K. Jasani, said the strong positioning was a result of good ratings for Malaysia in key areas of business operating environment (74), economics and growth (72.3) and financing environment (57.7).

“Malaysia, even though positioned after Singapore, possesses dynamic growing business prospects such as good business operating environment where foreign trade and exchange regimes and controls are well-developed.

“It also has healthy private consumption per head in economics and growth and also access of firms to medium-term capital in financing environment,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The GDI ranks 50 leading economies on their dynamism in five key areas—business operating environment, economics and growth, science and technology, labour and human capital as well as financing environment.

By analysing those changes to each economy which have enabled recovery from the 2008-2009 economic recession and are likely to lead to a fast rate of future growth, the index uncovers the best environment for dynamic businesses to grow.

“At first glance the results may seem counter-intuitive, as we associate dynamism with the pace of economic growth.

“However, the GDI is far more than just another measure of growth. By considering key fundamentals, such as the legal and political risks associated with operating in a given economy, the index gives a much truer reflection of how suitable an environment it offers for dynamic businesses,” Jasani said.

He said countries around the world should start to look at how they could boost the dynamism of their economies to boost global growth.
