Tune To Open First Hotel In Australia

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

MELBOURNE, (Bernama) - Malaysia's Tune hotel chain is set to open its first Australian property in Swanston Street here in November.

Tune's chief executive, Mark Lankester was here recently, to inspect the 235-room hotel.

Tune also plans to open a hotel in Sydney in 2015. It is also looking at Perth and Adelaide as future locations for its hotels.

Lankester told The Age newspaper that room rates would be "very affordable".

"When we opened in London in 2010 we had rooms for one penny. As you can imagine, that went ballistic.

"I'm not sure we can repeat such a low introductory price in Melbourne but the prices (for a limited number of rooms)will be very, very affordable indeed," the newspaper quoted him as saying.

The Tune hotel low-cost model is based on a similar concept to cheap airlines. They start with the basics and the extras added on.

The basics include a "five-star" bed, hot high-pressure power showers, a central location and 24-hour security. The extras include towels, air-conditioning, wi-fi and TV sets.

Lankester said the Melbourne hotel room rates could be between A$60 and A$100, depending on the extras and how far in advance a booking is made.

The Melbourne property, at 607 Swanston Street between the RMIT and Melbourne universities, will include a restaurant, cafe and courtyard, but without swimming pools, gyms or meeting rooms.

Tune has 29 hotels in Britain, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

It is also opening in the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Austria, Nigeria and Kenya, among other countries.
