KOTA KINABALU: Celcom Axiata Bhd will spend over RM85 million for network expansion and upgrades in Sabah and Sarawak over the next 12 to 18 months, says its Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly.
He said Celcom aimed to have an additional 134 third generation (3G) sites and another 150 long-term evolution (LTE) mobile telecommunication technology sites by mid-2014.
“Some of the first locations to be LTE-enabled in Sabah will include Jalan Taipakkung Donggongon, Jalan Lintas, Jalan Haji Samanl; Suria Sabah, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Jalan Kepayan, Jalan Sulaman 1 Borneo, Jalan Bunga Anggerik and Jalan UMS,” he said.
Shazalli (photo) said Celcom, Malaysia’s leading mobile communication provider, has and would continue network investments in Sabah and Sarawak.
In last three years, the company invested about RM300 million in both states which included installing more than 1,000 new sites, upgrading the 2G equipment to a single radio access network platform to cater for future LLTE) provision.
“We are committed to maintain our long-time position of having the fastest and widest network in Malaysia,” he said when announcing Celcom’s promotions for the Kaamatan (Harvest) Festival here today.
Celcom has an ongoing broadband for general population project with the objective to build 327 km of fibre in Sabah and 260 km of fiber in Sarawak, which is the largest fiberisation project in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Celcom Axiata Bhd’s customers in Sabah will be the first in Malaysia to enjoy “ESCAPE”, the exclusive digital personal entertainment that allows customers to watch movies, TV series, live broadcast and events on their digital gadgets, beginning June 1.
Shazalli Ramly said “ESCAPE” was the first service in the world that can be paused and played across devices like smart phones, tablets, laptops and personal computers.
“Celcom offers the opportunity to step up to a whole new level of advantages only on Celcom’s fastest, widest and most stable nationwide network, not to mention the exclusive promotions and packages designed specifically for our customers in Sabah.
“The promotions we are announcing today are just some of the many ways we use to thank our customers in Sabah for their unwavering support,” he said.
In conjunction with the festival, Shazalli unveiled exclusive pre-paid packs for new subscribers in Sabah which retailed for only RM8.50 each, available from now until June 30.
He said subscribers can make calls for as low as 2.8 sen per minute and one sen per short message service (SMS) and, customers could also choose additional voice or SMS and data packages at only RM1.
