Don't Panic: We have enough food items

Monday, March 11, 2013

Sufficient supply of food items in stores across Sabah, including in Lahad Datu. This was the assurance that was made by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin  following speculations online that the State could be thrown into chaos following the armed intrusion by Sulu gunmen in Lahad Datu. Such irresponsible speculation has triggered unwanted  panic buying within the state.

While carrying out his role as  Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Yahya said that the current stock at Padi Beras Nasional (BERNAS) was enough to accommodate the need of consumers in Sabah for at least another eight or nine months.

After after officiating “A Day With the Community” programme at Kg Lok Kawi Baru, he also took the opportunity to advise the public that there was no need to stockpile rice or other food items as the authorities were dealing with the Lahad Datu intrusion, saying the situation across the State was normal and safe.

“Don’t listen to rumours and speculation and most importantly, don’t get carried away and spread information that are not confirmed by the authorities...Supplies in other districts are also healthy, not just for rice but other essential items”
Datuk Yahya Hussin

He said supplies were being distributed as usual, and as of March 5 there were 39, 247 metric tonnes of rice available to consumers in Kota Kinabalu, 13,119 metric tonnes in Sandakan, 26,321 metric tonnes in Tawau, 9,530 metric tonnes for Lahad Datu.
