SANDAKAN: Residents in Batu Sapi here will enjoy better power supply with the addition of a gas turbine generator that has a capacity of 20 megawatts.

The generator was launched by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) with the co-operation of Simebest Corporation.

Industrial Development Minister, Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah said since it began operating two weeks ago, the new generator has boosted the previous 70 megawatts of electricity to 90 megawatts.

He was speaking to reporters yesterday while on a visit to the Gas Turbine Power Station.

“I am confident that this means there will be enough supply of electricity to meet current demand,” he said.

In August last year Sandakan SESB launched a portable generator capable of supplying 28 megawatts of electricity at the Seguntor Power Station near here.

The present demand for electricity in Sandakan has reached 112 megawatts and to overcome the shortage, SESB will obtain more power from the West Coast grid.

In the meantime, Raymond assured that the government has no intention to raise electricity tariffs even though the government has to bear the cost of 45 sen per unit. Consumers presently pay 29 sen per unit.

“The government does not intend to increase it but I would like to remind consumers to use energy prudently and conserve it whenever possible.

“For example, when leaving home for work, always switch off the air conditioning or any other electrical appliance. It’s important to reduce the cost of electricity consumption. Conserving energy should become part of our daily lives,” said Raymond who is also the Tanjung Papat assemblyman.

Also present for the visit were Elopura assemblyman, Au Kam Wah, SESB general manager (generation), Philix Laimon and Simebest Corporation Sdn Bhd director, Ahmad Zahari Mat Shaari.
