Sabah Ports to spend hefty sum on improving cargo handling

Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd has set aside substantial budget in order to improve the cargo handling equipment at all ports, said its Chairman, Datuk Karim Bujang.

He said this is due to the awareness that it is imperative to have sufficient equipment backed by qualified and skilled manpower.

“I am pleased to inform that we are already in the process of procuring additional Rubber Tyre Gantry Cranes, Empty Containers Handlers and Terminal Tractors and Trailers for the Sapangar Bay Container Port,” he said when delivering his speech at the Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd Appreciation Dinner 2013, here recently.

In addition to this, he said, Sabah Ports is also setting aside a significant amount this year for a forklift at the Kinabalu Port and in the East Coast Ports, a new Peachstacker at the Sandakan Port which is due to arrive sometime in February, while the Tawau Port will be getting new prime movers, reach stackers, container trailers and empty handlers in addition to the port’s existing equipment.


Sabah Ports will be spending on Preventive and Corrective Maintenance of equipment at all ports this year in order to maintain and keep the equipment in good condition.

Meanwhile, Karim said to complement and get the best results out of the additional equipment, Sabah Ports will emphasise on good customer service and continue to ensure the operations staff are skillful, well trained and customer-oriented.


At the dinner event, Sabah Ports announced the recipients of its Top Customer Awards who are Transpac Lines Sdn Bhd (Sapangar Bay Container Port), Priority Agencies Sdn Bhd (KK Port) and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd (Sepanggar Bay Oil Terminal).


Also present were Sabah Ports Group Managing Director, Datuk Dr. Fowzi Razi, State Customs Director, Datuk Dr. Janathan Kandok and City Hall Director-General, Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.
